Sorry for a slacking in hard posts, I’ve been training for a 5K which just finished today…so I’m beat…but on the up side, maybe I can write something worthwhile later today hah.

Good luck on your 5k! I ran a 5k in 31 minutes, my best time ever and I’ve never attempted to beat it or even match it because it hurt real bad
My hamstrings didn’t like it at all and I have been in physical therapy ever since. Woot.
Comment by bravesnuworld May 18, 2008 @ 12:43 pmHope the race went well. My keeping up with BravesBlast during training for the ING half marathon was a little sparse as well so everyone’ll understand. Now you just have to post twice as much.
How’d the race go?
Comment by Jonathan May 18, 2008 @ 2:45 pmMaybe that’s just getting old? Haha jk, uh I finished in 27 min, and got 3rd in my age category…I’m satisfied since it was my first one.
Comment by Ashley May 18, 2008 @ 4:03 pm27 minutes is good Ash. I am an idiot though because that 31 minute time was a 4 mile run. I ran a 5k in 23:00, and that is what likely led to the hamstring problems I have now. I pushed an extra mile out and ran hard (this is on a treadmill) and I never tried it like that again. Was this an official 5k race?
Jon, how do you train for a half marathon, just curious? Do you run daily?
peace all
Comment by bravesnuworld May 18, 2008 @ 7:52 pmOkay okay 23 isn’t shabby. And yes, it was quite official, it was at the Biltmore House in Asheville, N.C. pretty ritzy if I say so myself.
Comment by Ashley May 18, 2008 @ 8:56 pmWell, we’ll just keep turning Ash’s site into a running discussion
Anyways, my training for the ING half was awful. I was down for a month with foot problems and then another month with knee problems. Which really isn’t the best since I was trying to train in 3.5 month period haha. But no, I usually stick to about 4 days a week depending on my schedule at work. 3-6 miles MWF and then a long run on a weekend day. For the month before the race, I try to have built up to getting at least 5 in on the weekdays.
I’m trying to get started training for the RnR half in Virginia Beach over Labor Day (registered for that one, Disney in January and the next ING) but the knee is still struggling from the one in March. The orthopedist and physical therapists are doing their best though. I ran the Big Peach 5k a couple weekends ago to feel it out. Ran it in 32 min but the knee held up well so I was happy about that.
Ok, that was longer winded than I meant to write. I’ll go ahead and throw a link to your site on BravesBlast, Ash. If nothing else, so I don’t have to type the URL.
Comment by Jonathan May 18, 2008 @ 10:23 pmHaha well thaaaanks Jon I appreciate it. And wow all these leg/knee problems you guys are freakin me out. I hope I don’t run into anything, esp. seeing as how I’m a walking disaster. It’s basically why I write about sports and don’t play them collegiately, I’m too much of a liability.
hah
Comment by Ashley May 18, 2008 @ 10:30 pmHaha, don’t worry about it too much. Are you planning on training for longer distances? My biggest recommendation is don’t try to increase distance or make changes to your routine too quickly. My knee problems from the ING are just from that; I got behind on training because of the foot injury and tried to increase my distance too quickly.
You’ll be alright though. I didn’t play many sports throughout college either and then in these two years since I’ve decided that I needed to do something with myself.
Comment by Jonathan May 18, 2008 @ 10:34 pmI was getting so restless from not playing anything, so ultimately that’s why I decided to start. Down the road (hah) I hope to increase my distance, but I’m going to take it slow and build up my confidence first. I ran track in High School but I was a 800 m runner, so this longer distance of even 3 mi is a change to adjust to.
By the way, I returned the favor and linked you as well!
Comment by Ashley May 18, 2008 @ 10:47 pmI played baseball up until the middle of high school and then didn’t really do anything outside of occasional rec sports once I moved to Atlanta for my 6 years in college. I think I must’ve started and quit on running about 20 times.
But once I got out and settled into my job, I started running with a few friends and that made it easier. At least you have some running background . . . I’m fighting some serious unathletic genes.
Thanks
Comment by Jonathan May 18, 2008 @ 10:52 pmAthleticism means little if you have no grace. I was benched my junior/senior seasons of volleyball for mouth related injuries I somehow managed while playing.
Comment by Ashley May 18, 2008 @ 11:00 pmI guess that’s a valid point. I sustained a couple of those myself, but usually from getting hit in the face after running my mouth………you learn the hard way sometimes.
Comment by Jonathan May 18, 2008 @ 11:09 pmWhat happened to me is this: I was a fatass 235 in late 2005. It was either make a life change or die early. I decided to make a life change. I started working out. I had a marathon loving geek co worker who persuaded me to give running a try. I started slow. a mile and near death. After 6 months, it was 2.5 miles and near death. After a year, I was running 3-5 miles about 4 times a week, sometimes 5. In the middle of last year, I started getting bad pains. Some times it was so bad, I could not run. I never got it looked at because it would go away and I would just run again. Well, about 3 months ago, I was only able to run 2-3 times a week and the pain would be too much. I finally got it looked at early may. Well, my left hammies are tighter than a damn brick. Not good. And my hip flexors and what is called a T-band, need some serious stretching. The therapist was pulling and hitting on my hip stuff today and man, she found it. Anyway, I changed my work out schedule, and now I run much slower (6.1 on the treadmill and not 7.2) and half as long (1.6 miles, not 3.6 miles).
The pain is still there, but it is not as bad. And I should be able to recover. But, Ash, it is something to be wary of. Stretch all those stretches and don’t over stretch them. Just a little bit of push. I think I over stretched. And then I stopped stretching. Now I am in a bit of trouble.
By the way, I am 195 now and looking pretty damn good kids.
How was that for long winded and absolutely nothing about the Braves. But, I will make it braves related: I bet I can beat Chipper in a foot race.
peace
Comment by bravesnuworld May 19, 2008 @ 10:13 pmI don’t think we’ve been Braves-related for awhile….but neither was the original post, so it’s okay.
IT-bands can be a little tricky, but it’s pretty common and they have good braces for them if you really want to keep running with it.
Good stretching routines are key. I usually stretch for about 20 minutes after a run. Some days I’m exhausted and just don’t do it . . . I can tell for like a week afterwards.
Comment by Jonathan May 19, 2008 @ 10:42 pmWow I really started something, so I guess I’ll give it proper close too.
Comment by Ashley May 19, 2008 @ 11:23 pmWe learned a few things out of this,
a) Always stretch.
b) Don’t run too much too fast.
c) If you want to lose weight, running is a very viable option haha.
